THE WOODLANDS, TX — March 24, 2015 — Not only did leaping out of an airplane raise more than $48,000 for the Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation, but the Jump! Shout! event last September near Houston landed the 286 jumpers in the record book. Major sponsors for the event included iFLY, Ron Carter Ford & First Choice Emergency.
The Guinness World Records organization made it official this week, confirming that the 10,000-foot plunges into the blue at Skydive Spaceland-Houston in Rosharon eclipsed the previous record, by five, for most tandem skydive jumps made at one location in 24 hours.
The money raised will directly support children battling cancer, along with aiding their families. Says CCRF Founder & CEO Greg Anderson: “I am extremely proud of being part of a Guinness world record. But it’s an even greater honor to meet so many people who care enough to literally jump out of an airplane to help others. It means so much to the families who need the emotional and financial support to get through this devastating illness. Many of them cannot afford monthly expenses such as electric and heating bills because their money goes towards the treatment of their children.”
Jump! Shout! grew out of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, with CCRF Event Manager Holly Price working with jumpers from 18 to 81 who came from all walks of life. Ms. Price is still amazed at how this came together: “Everyone involved, jumpers, staff from Skydive Spaceland, sponsors and volunteers—they all rallied together to crush this record. It was truly an honor to be part of this world-class, and now world-record-holding, event.”
Making the jump at sunrise allowed Houston Pastor Chad Barrett to honor his daughter Kristina’s memory. She passed away earlier this year, at the age of 12, from a rare form of cancer.
Chad said: “It was my honor to participate and help other families who are enduring the same journey as my wife, Melissa, and I. To me, it was a privilege to take the plunge for CCRF and all that it does to help.”
Skydive Spaceland Owner & Founder Steve Boyd: “The Guinness record means Jump! Shout! will have a place in history, and I’m excited about that. But, what has me really happy is that we introduced so many people to skydiving while flying for this fantastic cause. I’m glad we were able to help children and families going through such a difficult battle.”
While unable to attend, President George H.W. Bush served as honorary chairman of the event.
